The Mysterious Benedict Society

The First book in The Mysterious Benedict Society series by Trenton Lee Stewart

Synopsis: “Are you a gifted child looking for special opportunities?” When this peculiar ad appears in the newspaper, dozens of children enroll to take a series of mysterious, mind-bending tests. (And you, dear reader, can test your wits right alongside them.) But in the end just four very special children will succeed. Their challenge: to go on a secret mission that only the most intelligent and resourceful children could complete. To accomplish it they will have to go undercover at the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened, where the only rule is that there are no rules. As our heroes face physical and mental trials beyond their wildest imaginations, they have no choice but to turn to each other for support. But with their newfound friendship at stake, will they be able to pass the most important test of all? Welcome to the Mysterious Benedict Society.

Okay…so this book has been all the rage at my kids school right now (probably because the Disney+ movie or tv show comes out at next week) but my kids and their classes have been OBSESSED with them.. so when my kids asked if we could have a movie day when it came out I decided that I wanted to read the books to see what all the hype was about… and honestly, I get it.

It was such a fun story! There’s action, drama, twists and turns, there are mysteries and problems to solve! There are so many riddles and puzzles, that I never really had any clue where the story was going to head next, it really gave nothing away. Which was so, so fun.

The characters are quite fun and so loveable, they’ve been through so much in their little lives that you just can’t help but feel so bad for them. All practically orphaned, they’re all smart in their own way, and you just can’t help but love them.

Although I’ll be honest, I went through most of the book really disliking Constance… I really just couldn’t see why she was my kids favourite character. She was constantly rude, mean, never listened, temperamental and I just didn’t get it. We discussed it a lot and they said that it would all make sense, so I kept reading… And I admit that at the end there, they were right. My heart melted.

The last chapter, oh my goodness… I may have cried… just a little tiny bit. I’m excited to see where the story goes next, I have my suspicions of where it could go. But judging by how I couldn’t see where this one was headed I doubt I’m right. But thankfully I bought the boxed set, so I’ll be picking up the next one soon! I’m quite excited about the movie or show or whatever it’s going to be too now! I think it’s gonna be great!

I rate this book
