A Novel by Maria Semple
Synopsis: Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she’s a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she’s a disgrace; to design mavens, she’s a revolutionary architect; and to 15-year-old Bee, she is her best friend and, simply, Mom. Then Bernadette vanishes. It all began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette’s intensifying allergy to Seattle — and people in general — has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands. A trip to the end of the earth is problematic. To find her mother, Bee compiles email messages, official documents, and secret correspondence — creating a compulsively readable and surprisingly touching novel about misplaced genius and a mother and daughter’s role in an absurd world.
This was apparently good enough to be turned into a movie? How the actual shit? I know of MANY books that would have been way more deserving of movie or tv adaptations that don’t yet have one… that’s total crap.
When I started the book I didn’t like the format of the emails and messages and notes, but I assumed that was only going to be a short beginning of the book while it was trying to build the story, I didn’t realize it would end up being most of the book in that format. That was very unfortunate.
This book wasn’t fun, it was actually annoying. Bernadette is a loser, she’s rude and mean and a racist and has quite the problem with Canadians for some fucking reason.. she had a ‘traumatic’ event that someone bought a house.. that she SOLD and tore it down. It happens all the time, get over it. So since then, she’s pushed people away and been super rude to everyone she comes into contact with. She’s allowed her child to live in filth and squalor with wet mouldy floors and holes in the roof because of her unwillingness to fix up a house again. Just a horrible person and a shit, shit, shit parent.
Her husband isn’t much better, he’s a self absorbed idiot who only cares about his work.. overworks and is never home, ignores his kid and his wife (even though she’s clearly going through some mental issues) until it’s far too late. He also knows about how bad the house has gotten, with weeds growing through the damn floor.. they even have a person come once a week to weed whack the living room, and he too doesn’t seem to care to move or make a better life for his kid.
Really, the only thing I liked about this book was the fact that some pages (due to the stupid email/note/text format) were super short, which made this book a very fast read…because it was over rather quickly thankfully.
And the ending? That was the most disappointing ending ever, I think that if the ending was better it would have possibly gotten a better rating, I was hoping the ending would be its redemption. But nope. So disappointed.
I rate this book
