The Brilliant Death

The First book in the Brilliant Death Series by Amy Rose Capetta

Synopsis: Teodora di Sangro is used to hiding her magical ability to transform enemies into music boxes and mirrors. Nobody knows she’s a strega—and she aims to keep it that way. The she meets Cielo—and everything changes. A strega who can switch outward form as effortlessly as turning a page in a book, Cielo shows Teodora what her life could be like if she masters the power she’s been keeping secret. And not a moment too soon: the ruler of Vinalia has poisoned the patriarchs of the country’s five controlling families, including Teodora’s father, and demands that each family send a son to the palace. If she wants to save her family, Teodora must travel to the capital—not disguised as a boy, but transformed into one. But the road to the capital, and to bridling her powers, is full of enemies and complications, including the one she least expects: falling in love.

Alright… Honestly I’m going to blame this book for my super long reading slump, I got three quarters of the way through and had no interest in reading anymore. Just stopped for months, I was so bored and couldn’t fathom picking up another book.

This book gave off some major Mulan vibes… Girl saves family by turning into a son but instead of just dressing like a boy her magic turns her into one, and she falls in love with a shapeshifter who flits from girl to boy also, it’s a lot of confusing shape shifting.

She can also turn people into objects or animals and things like that, although her magic was sporadic and inconsistent..Overall the magic in this book was hella lame. I wasn’t invested in any of the characters they were all so boring and self centred. Their plots and plans and strategies made absolutely no sense. Nothing was really explained, things just happened for what felt like no reason at all.

Did not enjoy this book. Hopefully now that I finished it I can find a book that will grab my attention enough to get me back into reading!

I rate this book
